Carlos Dominguez, Senior Vice President for US Providers Sales at Cisco, posted a follow-up of his amazingly large virtual sales meeting that had 17,000 participants engaging in a variety of activities using multiple online tools (TelePresence, WebEx, IPTV). To turn an annual face-to-face sales meeting into a virtual one is not only a massive technical challenge but a social one as well. It was obvious in Dominguez’s post that some excitement was lost and can only be gained from meeting old friends in person but the economic realities far outweighed the social inadequacies of the virtual gathering.
Yes, I did miss my friends and colleagues but at 10% the cost of an in-person event, the increase in productivity by eliminating the time loss due to travel, and the positive impact on the environment, I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of these kinds of events in the future.
I don’t think we’ll ever be able to replace the human need for live interaction (maybe with holograms) but at 10% the cost I have a feeling a lot more people will take this kind of technology for a spin.
Noticing a theme here? 10% of the cost for a face-to-face meeting. Innovative solutions for trying times.
