DIY Gadget Porn

Over the years, I wrote a lot of junk regarding gadgets that I love, hate, or wish to own.  The supporting images for such gadgets were mostly cross-linked from sites that took professional shots. Well no more.  I have more photo equipment than an amateur weekend shooter should ever have, which sadly gathers dust on most of those weekends.  With an uncontrollable penchant for buying gadgets, and the photo gear to properly capture such crazed purchases, it is time that I set up my own glamor shots. I went online to purchase yet another gadget, a lightbox for product photos, like this one.  They sure look nice and I could go for yet another purchase but the rolling eyes of my lovely wife told me that this may not be a good use of our hard earn money.  So I scrounged around and built one myself, allowing me to test capture my iPhone that you see on this post.  The items to built such a beaut included:

  • Old printer box that was used in the garage as storage for extra sprinkler parts
  • Masking tape
  • Flexible poster board
  • Box-cutter
  • Gift tissue paper
  • Three desktop lamps

Put all those items together and you get a lightbox only a impatient, extremely amature DIYer could love.  The whole project did not take as long as I expected and I am pleased with the results.  So hopefully from now on, gadget shots you see on my site will be taken by me and my getto-fabulous lightbox.  Maybe I can finally take those iPad shots I always wanted.  Regardless, this project got me off my lazy butt and motivated to write.  For those who would like a step-by-step instructions on how to build one yourself, well don’t look at me.  Do what I did and Google it.  I used this one to get me started.  Have fun!
