Today I ran, seriously, ran from person to person at work as I scrambled to make printers, websites, digital repositories all sing in techno harmony (interestingly enough, I ran at lunch to help burn off excess energy, go figure).  As I moved from person to person, I took notes, jot down ideas and dictated conversations on my trusted graphing paper notebook.  The sad thing is, the damn thing is falling apart.  Pages are pulled and folded, order is only known by me.  The notebook would represent chaos to anyone else, but it is my safe haven for my thoughts, work and doodles when I am stuck.  I trusted my security blanket until today. Today I ached for a slate.

Michael Mace posted an excellent article questioning if Apple is too powerful.  With the recent announcement of the iPod Nano and it’s new camera functionality, many wondered why Apple is doing incremental upgrades vs. revolutionary ones they are known for.  It seems Apple wants a piece of the cheap camcorder market, or the Flip market.  It may be a sign that Apple has achieved it’s goal as the dominate trend setter for the mobile market.  With no real threat to their portable music market and their sheer dominance in the mobile phone app market, they are no longer the beloved underdogs of the tech industry.  Now that they are on top, innovation is becoming stagnant, not an uncommon problem for those who dominate a market.  What makes this terrifying as Michael Mace states is that Apple is not trying to create a new market but trying to take over an established one.  Sounds familiar?  continue reading…

wallThere is a lot of noise out there from the fallout of Google’s rejected iPhone apps, Latitude and Voice, for the app store.  I absolutely agree with Gizmodo that Apple’s inconsistent method of app approval process is by far the greatest injustice that can be handed down to both developer and consumer. How long can Apple continue this confusing process?  Apple can smartly say as long as they like, the public has spoken through the sale numbers of their latest iPhone.  Developers are going to support where the consumers are but how long can that stay true for Apple?  Like the biblical Walls of Jericho, the death march has started and the voice of discontent reverberates.  So much so that the FCC is now involved.  This is why closed communities fail. continue reading…
