It seems the Senate has agreed to delay the switch over to digital TV that was intended to occur on February 18th of this year.  The fear is the backlog of some 20+ million request for DTV digital converter-box coupons that have not been fulfilled and thus leading to mass panic and hysteria for those not bound to cable/IPTV/satellite services.  Here is a quote from Sen. Rockefeller:

“We are only weeks away from doing it dreadfully wrong—and leaving consumers with the consequences,” he said. “It is no secret that the outgoing administration grossly mismanaged the digital television transition.”

I agree that the previous administration could have done a better job prepping the masses about DTV. I had to do my own PR for my parents as they were at a loss of what will happen in Febuary. But with the daily reminders of the switch broadcasting regularly on analog TV, we are only making it worse by telling folks that it will in fact not happen on the stated date.  I say stick with the original plan and extend the coupon program till mid June.  I like to believe that Americans are intelligent and resourceful.  If the signal blips out, those who were not ready will figure out the solution.  Take the the tongue lashing now rather than later.  There are just some people that will wait till the last minute and no amount of time will help them.

I guess I can understand why Obama would request such a delay.  Other than what was stated above, Obama does not want to be seen by those oblivious to current events, as the President that took away their happy box.  None the less I still think this is a bad move.

For those of you who do not have cable or satellite (or do not care for them like me) will be able to purchase a digital converter box for your aging TVs next month.

The NTIA said that approved devices will be on store shelves no later than February 18. The converter boxes will take a digital TV signal and change it to a signal that older TV sets can recognize.

Though I fully support OTA, I am also in favor of junking the crt for new LCD/plasma TVs with ATSC tuners.  Hey if I can make the sacrifice to go all LCD only TVs throughout my home, you should be able to do the same!

Since I do not subscribe to cable or satellite and get all my programing over-the-air, or OTA, it seems I qualify for two $40 coupons to help me purchase digital converter boxes for my non-HD televisions.  This is great for folks like me that do not want to be locked into cable or satellite.  If you do have one or the other, then you do not need to worry as your provider will already convert the digital signal for you.  I hope to replace the remaining LCDs in my home with HD versions before 2009 (I gave up the old cathode ray tube displays a while back). But it is nice that I have time on my hands with these coupons. You want to know more?  Take a look here.

My dad ask me why I bought him an over-the-top video game system referring to the PS3. First off, if any of y’all know my dad, that last sentence alone should stop you in your tracks. What does my dad know about the PS3? After shaking off the blow of what I just heard, I told him that other than Tiger Woods Golf, this is the best way to watch HD movies. His next question was obvious, why not buy a dedicated player? Not a bad question at all, so then I sat him down and went to work. continue reading…

During the Thanksgiving break, I helped my father purchase a very nice Sony 52″ 1080p LCD TV. I spent the day hooking up the gear and routing cables to his new set. Oh I also purchased a PS3 to get him on board with Blu-Ray. That’s right Sony, I hooked you up, where is my cut? Any way, after getting everything connected, several things became clear for me. continue reading…
