mobilehd11TechOn! is reporting (though Renesas made the announcement on April 29, 2009) that the SH-MobileHD1 is now shipping!  So why is this cool regardless of when it was reported?  Renesas, the company behind the tech, is first to the market with a mobile chip that is capable of delivering 1080p video with Dolby Digital codec support in a chip design for mobile tech, aka cell phones.  The spec sheet is staggering! continue reading…

Tonight was the start of ConnectED ‘09 at Abilene Christian University.  ConnectED is centered around the theme of enhancing learning through mobile devices.  ACU has made major strides in incorporating mobile technology as part of their campus infrastructure.  ACU’s ambitious efforts generated immense traction at the recent EDUCAUSE and judging by the size of the crowd at tonight’s keynote speech, they have stumbled onto something big, really big. continue reading…

Cisco just updated their mobile data projections for the next four years. The most interesting projection I found in the .pdf was the following:

Mobile data traffic will grow from 1 petabyte per month to 1 exabyte per month in half the time it took fixed data traffic to do so. In the 7 years from 2005 to 2012, mobile data traffic will have increased a thousand-fold. The Internet grew from 1 petabyte per month to 1 exabyte per month in 14 years.

Video will be the driving force as mobile broadband speeds increase to support higher quality rich media. The potential to deliver complete movies, streaming tv content and even video conferencing will expand dramatically within five years. YouTube revolutionized how video was transported and distributed to the masses over the web. I wonder what will be the mobile equivalent? Anyone out there have the billion dollar answer?

  • BlackBerry Storm
  • T-Mobile G1
  • ATT iPhone
  • Sprint Palm Pre
  • Countless WinMo devices
  • Countless Symbian devices

Based on hype, here is my take: continue reading…
